AN EXPLORATION OF THE EVOLVING FOOD SYSTEMS AND POLICY IMPERATIVES FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE IN KENYA
In this flagship study—part of a broader series on food systems transformation—the BRICS Insights team examines the evolution of Kenya’s food systems since independence and synthesizes key findings in this policy brief. Despite experiencing rapid economic and demographic growth, Kenya continues to grapple with persistent food insecurity, malnutrition, and poverty. The brief provides a critical review of the current state of food system transformation, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive reform. Major challenges include the impacts of climate change, food loss and waste along the value chain, limited access to productive resources, and weak market linkages. Addressing these issues requires targeted support for small-scale farmers, promotion of sustainable agricultural practices, increased investment in research and development, enhanced market access, and deliberate action to improve nutrition outcomes among vulnerable populations.
